No More Homework

img_1569     As a high school student, I’m sure it’s expected that I agree with the idea of banning homework instead of assigning it.  Although it may be unreasonable, here are some reasons why it should be rid of in all classes.

First, you can’t love every class that you take in school.  Evidently, in many cases, students do not like the class that they are in and therefore, have no interest in the material that the teacher covers or the assignments that the student is forced to complete if they want to pass the class.  When students hate doing the extra work after six to seven hours of learning, they tend to procrastinate and put off doing the assignments for as long as possible, which leads to an overwhelming amount of stress.

Second, for a substantially large number of students, life at home is tough.  Some students don’t have the supplies, the support, a quiet place to focus on completing their assignments, or time.  Many students feel pressured to support themselves throughout the school year by working and therefore, don’t have quality time to spend working on their homework.

Lastly, a great amount of studies have shown that home work, in fact, does not increase levels of students’ engagement or academic performance.  In some cases, the levels decrease.  This is because of added stress on students and minimal free time to spend with friends and family, exercising, relaxing, or having fun.

In conclusion, constantly pressuring students to always do their homework result in stressed out students who struggle to make good or even just passing grades and are left with little to no free time to socialize and take care of themselves in whatever ways to keep themselves happy.

The Next Presidential Election

img_4673

According to an article from BBC, Howard Schultz: Starbucks tycoon roasted over 2020 plan, there is another billionaire possibly running for U.S. president in the 2020 election.  It feels like yesterday when we all believed that Hillary Clinton was going to win the 2016 election, but lo and behold Donald Trump is now the President of the United States.  The sixty-five-year-old Howard Schultz, retiree from running the famous Starbucks franchise, has begun to put his name out there as a possible “Independent” candidate.  With our country at the pinnacle of division between parties, both Democrats and Republicans could lose many people from their cause.  Although Democrats seem the most worried at the moment.  The ratings for Trump, especially in the past few weeks, have only gone down.  Democrats are rejoicing at the chance of winning the next election but, with Howard Schultz possibly stripping them of followers, their worries have begun to increase.  Many politicians and social media groups have vocalized the stupidity of the idea.  Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center of Politics tweeted,

“Has @HowardSchultz ever heard the old saying, ‘The road to hell is paved with good intentions?’  Someone should explain it to him.  His slogan might as well be, ‘Re-elect Trump’.”

Although the Republicans also have a chance of losing followers, they don’t seem as worried.  Donald Trump is even tweeting remarks to egg him on.  This only brings more worries to the Democratic Party.

The problem is the Howard Schultz says he just can’t take either side.  Although he more has given much towards Democratic agendas he doesn’t follow what it says completely.  He has many opposing views.  If he’s going to try to become President, he wants to do it genuinely and for what his actual opinions and beliefs rather than being bound to a certain parties agenda.

Now why is this relevant if the election is so far away?  The students in the present 2019 and 2020 class are going to be voting for this.  That means we cannot simply play dumb and watch without learning about every candidate.  We will have a chance to affect who leads this country.  With social media, and many of us possibly going into law, politics or anything surrounding our government we have not only to be careful of what we read, but of what we present to the world.  We are the next generation entering into adulthood.  We have a chance to shape this country into something new.  We don’t have to simply argue in our English class.  We will change this country, for better or for worse.

I’m pretty sure my mom is a saint. Sometimes I have a hard time comprehending how she deals with my sister, my dad, and I so benevolently.

She does absolutely everything in her power to make everyone happy and keep everyone on track. She makes sure everyone has five star lunch and dinner every day. She keeps the house looking as if it could be a show house, set up by a real estate broker. She acts as my sister’s (and mine before I got my license) uber driver, ready at her beck and call. She helps people with their dirty work when they have too much on their hands. She doesn’t ever explode at my sister or I, even if we act insane. She puts up with the hurricane of teenage angst that my sister is at the moment (it’s quite horrific). She deals with my incredibly negative, awful, stress induced rants and my sometimes concerning, raunchy humor. She also drives a monstrous Toyota Hylander sent from hell, meant to transport more children than anyone ever needs to. She listens to my god awful music and pretends it doesn’t make her want to rip her ears off. She’d sacrifice almost anything if it would benefit someone she loves. But most importantly, she genuinely cares with all her heart. I have never met a more genuine and selfless person, ever.
